Bariatric surgery is surgery done for weight loss in the morbidly obese. World renowned and experienced Surgeons at SRV Mamata Hospital perform Bariatric surgery.
Morbid obesity basically means one has excessive body fat and is at least a 45 kg above ideal weight or has a BMI of over 35. The indications for surgery have been reset in the Asian population to a BMI of 37.5 without comorbidities or 32.5 with comorbidities. In certain cases of heavily uncontrolled metabolic problems, such as diabetes mellitus, it may be even done for BMI over 30. It is also called as ‘Metabolic’ surgery because it resolves a lot of metabolic problems associated with obesity and the surgery is rarely done from the purely cosmetic point of view. Bariatric surgery is usually well accepted in the 18-70 age group and under exceptional circumstances, may be done in the adolescents in the 13- 18 age group.
